1 kreuzer of Leopold of Baden (1845-1852)

The coin's story

This copper 1 kreuzer coin was struck for the Grand Duchy of Baden under Grand Duke Leopold, who reigned from 1830 to 1852. The kreuzer was worth one sixtieth of a gulden, the currency of the southern German states. The year 1848 was that of the revolution in Germany, in May 1849, after the garrison of Rastatt went over to the insurgents, Leopold had to flee his country. The Baden uprising was crushed by Prussian troops, Rastatt surrendered on 23 July 1849, and the Grand Duke returned to Karlsruhe in August. Both sides were engraved by Carl Friedrich Voigt. The type was struck from 1845 to 1852, and the 1848 date has 231,770 pieces.
