This schilling in 375 thousandths billon was struck in 1851 by the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Until 1875, Hamburg reckoned in Mark Courant, a real currency divided into 16 schillings, alongside the Mark Banco, the city bank's money of account. The reverse legend HAMB. COUR. thus means “Hamburg currency”. The obverse shows the three-towered castle of the city's arms. The coin was struck only with the date 1851, in 240,000 pieces. The Hamburg mark disappeared with the introduction of the imperial mark.
