The coin's story

This aluminium 2 mark coin was struck by the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It bears the State emblem: the hammer and compass within a wreath of rye tied with a ribbon in the colours black, red and gold. The currency of the East was created in June 1948, in response to the currency reform of the western zones of 20 June. The reverse bears the value, under the name DEUTSCHE MARK, between oak leaves. Both sides are the work of Rudi Högner and Axel Bertram. This type was struck only in 1957, in Berlin, in 77,960,942 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 1990.
