Series of GDR 20 pfennig with the State emblem (1969-1990)

The coin's story

This 20 pfennig coin in brass was struck by the German Democratic Republic (GDR). It bears the State emblem: the hammer and compass within a wreath of rye tied with a ribbon in the colours black, red and gold. The GDR created its own currency in response to the western currency reform of June 1948, and its coins were mostly struck in aluminium. The type was struck from 1969 to 1990, in Berlin (A). The 1969 date has 167,168,000 pieces. After monetary union with the Federal Republic, the coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 July 1991. According to Numista, the 1969 coins exist without a mint letter.
