This 10 mark coin in nickel-brass commemorates the twenty-fifth anniversary of the National People's Army (Nationale Volksarmee, NVA), the army of the GDR. The People's Chamber passed the law creating it on 18 January 1956, and the first units were sworn in on 1 March 1956, a date then celebrated every year. The reverse, engraved by Heinz Rodewald, shows three fighter aircraft, a ship and a tank. The obverse bears the arms of the GDR, the value and the letter A of Berlin. According to Numista, 810,300 pieces were struck, of which 183,600 were melted down, leaving the 626,700 recorded for this coin. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 30 June 1990.
