Second series of the GDR, 10 pfennig (1952-1953)

The coin's story

This aluminium 10 pfennig coin belongs to the second series of the German Democratic Republic, struck only in 1952 and 1953. The hammer and compass set on two ears of wheat replaced the gear wheel of the first series: they symbolise the alliance of the working class, the peasants and the intelligentsia, after the emblem of the five-year plan. The coins still bear the name DEUTSCHLAND. They were struck in Berlin (A) and Muldenhütten (E). The 1952 date has 21,497,796 pieces at Muldenhütten. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 31 December 1970.
