Series of 50 escudos with the caravel (1986-2001)

The coin's story

This 50 escudos coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, belongs to the last series of the escudo, the “1981-2001 system”. The type was struck from 1986 to 2001, and 1986, its first date, has 15,110,158 pieces for circulation. Both sides are the work of Euclides Vaz, who signs the obverse. According to Numista, several obverse and reverse dies were used over the years, and the 1986 coins were struck with the very first pair. The escudo was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2002, at a rate of 200.482 escudos to the euro, and the coin ceased to be legal tender on 28 February 2002.
