International Year of Disabled Persons (1981)
This cupronickel 100 escudos coin is the larger of the two coins issued by Portugal for the International Year of Disabled Persons, proclaimed for 1981 by the United Nations. It honours Jacob Rodrigues Pereira, born in 1715 in Peniche into a family of crypto-Jews, who left around 1741 for Bordeaux in order to return to Judaism. In France, he devoted himself to teaching the deaf and mute. His “Observations sur les sourds muets”, published in Paris in 1762, are considered the first scientific work on the deaf and earned him a pension from Louis XV. He died in Paris in 1780. An institute founded in Lisbon in 1834, now part of the Casa Pia, bears his name. Both sides were engraved by Armando Matos Simões, and the coin was struck in 990,000 pieces for circulation.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.4 mm.
