25th Rink Hockey World Championship, Barcelos (1982)

The coin's story

This cupronickel 2.50 escudos coin is part of the series issued by Portugal for the 1982 Rink Hockey (roller hockey) World Championship. The tournament opened on 1 May 1982 in Barcelos, Portugal. The Portuguese team won its twelfth world title there on 16 May, eight years after the previous one. The series also includes coins of 1, 5 and 25 escudos, and a set was devoted to it. The reverse, signed Dorita, is the work of Dorita Castel-Branco. The coin was struck in Lisbon in 1,990,000 pieces, and it was demonetised in 1998.
