A novelist, historian and poet, Herculano was among the writers who introduced Romanticism to Portugal. A liberal, he knew exile in England and France after a failed revolt against Miguel I. Librarian of the Royal Library of Ajuda from 1839, he then devoted years to his História de Portugal, based on the original manuscripts. The three coins of the series, of 2.50, 5 and 25 escudos, were engraved by Marcelino Norte de Almeida, mirror-field (“proof-like”) examples were sold in a set of the three coins. Numista gives 5,990,000 pieces for circulation and 10,000 in proof.
