Series of 25 escudos with the head of Liberty, large module (1980-1986)

The coin's story

This cupronickel 25 escudos coin takes up the design by Marcelino Norte de Almeida created for the first 25 escudos coin of 1977-1978, but in a larger module of 28.5 millimetres. The laureate head and the motto LIBERDADE DEMOCRACIA (Liberty, Democracy) recall the return of democracy after the Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974, which ended 48 years of the Estado Novo dictatorship. This large module was struck from 1980 to 1986, then withdrawn from circulation in 1986. The 1984 date has 3,453,000 pieces.
