Series of bronze 10 centavos with the head of the Republic (1924-1940)
This bronze 10 centavos coin was struck under the First Republic, in a period of steep depreciation of the escudo. The escudo, divided into 100 centavos, had replaced the real on 22 May 1911, at a rate of 1,000 réis to the escudo. In 1924, the government of Álvaro de Castro reformed the metal coinage to halt the fall of the currency, by lowering the real value of the coins. This 10 centavos was struck from 1924 to 1940, long after the end of the First Republic in 1926. It bears the value on one side and on the other a head of the Republic, without legend. The 1925 date has 9,090,000 pieces.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.5 mm.
