Series of cupronickel 10 centavos with the head of the Republic (1920-1921)

The coin's story

This 10 centavos coin in cupronickel, 80% copper and 20% nickel, was struck under the First Republic, in the monetary system of 1917-1922. The escudo, divided into 100 centavos, had replaced the real on 22 May 1911, at a rate of 1,000 réis to the escudo. The coin bears the value on one side and on the other a head of the Republic, without legend. The type was struck only in 1920 and 1921, and 1921 has 1,285,000 pieces. From 1924, a new bronze 10 centavos coin with the same design was put into circulation. This one ceased to be legal tender on 1 August 1929.
