Series of 25 escudos with the head of Liberty (1977-1978)
This cupronickel 25 escudos coin belongs to the first type of 25 escudos created by the Portuguese Republic after the Carnation Revolution. Its type was created by Decree 847/76 of 15 December 1976, and Decree 534/77 of 30 December 1977 set its design. This second decree also changed the weight of 8 grams originally planned, because the coin could be confused with the 1 escudo in vending machines. Both sides are the work of Marcelino Norte de Almeida, who placed on the reverse a laureate head with the motto LIBERDADE DEMOCRACIA (Liberty, Democracy). The type was struck only in 1977 and 1978, then replaced in 1980 by a larger coin with the same design. The 1978 date has 12,277,000 pieces.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.4 mm.
