10th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution (1984)
This cupronickel 25 escudos coin marks the tenth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution. On 25 April 1974, a coup led by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA) put an end to 48 years of the Estado Novo dictatorship. The revolution took place almost without violence. The population offered red carnations to the soldiers, who slipped them into the barrels of their rifles, and the flower became the symbol of the day. Both sides are the work of the sculptor Hélder Batista, who signs the obverse with his name. The coin was struck in Lisbon by the Imprensa Nacional - Casa da Moeda in 1,980,000 pieces for circulation, and in 10,000 pieces in brilliant uncirculated quality for sets.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.25 mm.
