Portugal · 1986 · 5 escudosSeries of 5 escudos with the stained glass (1986-2001)
This 5 escudos coin in nickel-brass, 79% copper, 20% zinc and 1% nickel, belongs to the last series of the escudo. The type was struck from 1986 to 2001, and 1986 is its first date. Both sides are the work of Hélder Batista: the shield of Portugal surmounted by a sailor's knot on one side, a stained-glass motif above the value on the other, as on the 10 escudos coin of the same series. According to Numista, the coins from 1986 to 1991 were struck with a first pair of dies, then a second pair was used from 1992 to 2001. The escudo was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2002, and this coin ceased to be legal tender on 28 February 2002.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2 mm.
