The coin's story

This 4 centavos coin in cupronickel, 75% copper and 25% nickel, was struck under the First Republic. The escudo, divided into 100 centavos, had replaced the real on 22 May 1911, at a rate of 1,000 réis to the escudo. This 4 centavos coin belongs to the system of 1917-1922, it was struck only in 1917 and 1919. It bears the value on one side and on the other a head of the Republic wearing a cap adorned with laurel, without legend. According to Numista, the side with the value was engraved by Francisco dos Santos and the head by Domingos Alves do Rego. The 1919 date has 10,067,000 pieces.
