FAO coin programme, agriculture (1983)

The coin's story

This cupronickel 2.50 escudos coin is the smallest of the three coins issued in 1983 by Portugal under the coin programme of the FAO, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Each denomination illustrates a resource: maize for agriculture on this 2.50 escudos coin, the cow for dairy production on the 5 escudos, and the cod for fisheries on the 25 escudos. The series accompanied World Food Day, celebrated every 16 October in memory of the founding of the FAO in 1945. The reverse is the work of Euclides Vaz and the obverse that of Marcelino Norte de Almeida. The coin was struck in Lisbon in 995,000 pieces.
