Series of 1 escudo with the stained glass (1986-2001)
This small 1 escudo coin in nickel-brass, 79% copper, 20% zinc and 1% nickel, belongs to the last series of the escudo, struck from 1986 to 2001. Both sides are the work of Hélder Batista: the shield of Portugal surmounted by a sailor's knot on one side, a stained-glass motif above the value on the other, as on the 5 and 10 escudos coins of the same series. According to Numista, the signature H.BATISTA is small and placed at the bottom left of the numeral from 1986 to 1992, then large and level with the numeral afterwards. The 1986 date, the first, has 14,882,000 pieces for circulation. The escudo was replaced by the euro on 1 January 2002, and this coin ceased to be legal tender on 28 February 2002.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.2 mm.
