The coin's story
This bronze 10 centavos coin, 95% copper, 3% tin and 2% zinc, belongs to the series struck from 1942 to 1969 under the Estado Novo. According to Decree-Law 49167 of 1969, the bronze 10 and 20 centavos coins were replaced in 1943 by lighter coins, which then remained in circulation. Both sides are the work of Marcelino Norte de Almeida. He placed on one side the five escutcheons of Portugal arranged in a cross and, on the other, the value in Roman numerals above olive sprigs, as on the 20 centavos coin of the same series. The 1964 date has 10,257,000 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 January 1982.
