Series of bronze 5 centavos with the arms (1920-1922)

The coin's story

This bronze 5 centavos coin was struck under the First Republic, in the monetary system of 1917-1922. The escudo, divided into 100 centavos, had replaced the real on 22 May 1911, at a rate of 1,000 réis to the escudo. The coin bears on one side the arms of Portugal on the armillary sphere, without legend, and on the other the value and the date. According to Numista, the arms were engraved by Domingos Alves do Rego. The type was struck only in 1920, 1921 and 1922, and 1921 is by far the most common date, with 5,916,000 pieces, the 1922 mintage is counted with that of 1921.
