Series of cupronickel 20 centavos with the head of the Republic (1920-1922)

The coin's story

This 20 centavos coin in cupronickel, 80% copper and 20% nickel, was struck under the First Republic. The escudo, divided into 100 centavos, had replaced the real on 22 May 1911, at a rate of 1,000 réis to the escudo. This coin belongs to the system of 1917-1922 and was struck only in 1920, 1921 and 1922. It bears the value on one side and on the other a head of the Republic within a circle, without legend. Its edge alternates reeded and plain sections. According to Numista, there are also rare examples 22 millimetres in diameter instead of 23, and varieties with an open P. The 1921 date has 3,030,000 pieces.
