Series of bronze 1 centavo with the arms (1917-1922)

The coin's story

This bronze 1 centavo coin, the smallest denomination of the escudo, was struck under the First Republic. The escudo, divided into 100 centavos, had replaced the real on 22 May 1911, at a rate of 1,000 réis to the escudo. This coin belongs to the system of 1917-1922. It bears on one side the arms of Portugal on the armillary sphere, without legend, and on the other the value and the date. According to Numista, the arms were engraved by Domingos Alves do Rego. The 1918 date is the largest of the series, with 22,996,000 pieces, against 2,250,000 in 1917.
