International Year of the Child (1979)
This cupronickel 25 escudos coin celebrates the International Year of the Child. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed it on 21 December 1976 for the year 1979, the twentieth anniversary of the Declaration of the Rights of the Child adopted in 1959, and entrusted its coordination to UNICEF. The reverse is the work of the sculptor Lagoa Henriques (1923-2009), author of the famous statue of Fernando Pessoa outside the café A Brasileira, in Lisbon's Chiado district. He brings together two children's faces and the appeal DÁ-ME O TEU AMOR (Give me your love). Although dated 1979, the coin was struck only in 1985, according to Numista. It was struck in 990,000 pieces for circulation and 10,000 in proof.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.25 mm.
