The coin's story
This small bronze 20 centavos coin belongs to the monetary system of 1969, introduced by Decree-Law 49167. It replaced a larger 20 centavos coin of 20 millimetres, in circulation since 1942. Both sides are the work of Marcelino Norte de Almeida. He placed on one side the five escutcheons of Portugal arranged in a cross and, on the other, the value above olive sprigs. The type was struck from 1969 to 1974, and 1974, the year of the Carnation Revolution, is its largest date, with 26,975,000 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 28 February 2002, after the changeover to the euro.
