Series of nickel-brass 1 escudo (1981-1986)

The coin's story

This small nickel-brass 1 escudo coin belongs to the “1981-2001 system”, the last series of the escudo. It succeeded the large bronze 1 escudo with the ears of wheat, struck from 1969 to 1979. Both sides are the work of Marcelino Norte de Almeida: the shield of Portugal on one side, the value alone on the other. The type was struck from 1981 to 1986. According to Numista, the date is thin from 1981 to 1984 and in 1986, and thick in 1985. The 1981 date, the first, has 30,164,739 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 28 February 2002, after the changeover to the euro.
