Series of bronze 5 centavos with the head of the Republic (1924-1927)

The coin's story

This bronze 5 centavos coin, 96% copper and 4% zinc, belongs to the monetary system of 1924, created under the First Republic to halt the depreciation of the escudo. It bears the value on one side and on the other a head of the Republic, without legend. The 1927 date was struck after the military coup of 28 May 1926, launched from Braga under General Gomes da Costa, which ended the First Republic. The coin nevertheless kept the legend REPÚBLICA PORTUGUESA, and the period from 1926 to 1933 is called the Military Dictatorship. The 1927 date, the last of the type, is also the largest, with 26,320,000 pieces.
