Series of 5 cents of William I with monogram (1818-1828)

The coin's story

This 5 cents coin in 569 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1818 to 1828 in the name of William I, first King of the Netherlands. Instead of a portrait, it bears a large crowned monogram W. At that time, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands created in 1815 still included the Belgian provinces, and the Brussels Mint struck the kingdom's coins alongside the Utrecht Mint until the Belgian Revolution of 1830. This example bears the letter B of the Brussels Mint, with the palm branch, privy mark of G.D. Bourgogne Herlaer, mintmaster in Brussels from 1821 to 1830. The 1825 date was struck in Brussels in 900,012 pieces. The coin is no longer legal tender.
