The coin's story
This 25 cents coin in 640 thousandths silver belongs to the short series struck in 1848 and 1849, at the end of the reign of William II. William II reigned from 1840 to 1849, faced with the European revolutions of 1848, he had the liberal Johan Thorbecke draft a new constitution that strengthened Parliament and the ministers at the expense of the King. The portrait is the work of Johannes Petrus Schouberg, engraver at the Utrecht Mint. The value and the date are inscribed on the reverse within a wreath. The 1849 date, the last of the series, was struck at the Royal Mint in Utrecht. The coin is no longer legal tender.
