Series of 25 cents of William I with monogram (1817-1830)

The coin's story

This 25 cents coin in 569 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1817 to 1830 in the name of William I, first King of the Netherlands. Instead of a portrait, it bears the King's crowned monogram W. At that time, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands created in 1815 still included the Belgian provinces, and the Brussels Mint struck the kingdom's coins alongside the Utrecht Mint until the Belgian Revolution of 1830. The reverse shows the crowned arms between the two parts of the value, with the mintmaster's privy mark on the left and the mint mark on the right. In Utrecht, the mintmaster Y.D.C. Suermondt marked his coins with a burning torch from 1818. The 1826 date was struck in 12,289,384 pieces at Utrecht and 6,146,916 at Brussels (B).
