Guilder of William I for the Dutch East Indies (1839-1840)
This silver guilder bears the words NEDERLANDSCH INDIE: it was struck in 1839 and 1840 for the Dutch East Indies, in the name of William I. William I, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg since the Congress of Vienna of 1815, lost the Belgian provinces with the revolution of 1830 and only recognised their independence in 1839, he abdicated on 7 October 1840. Unlike the guilders struck for the home country, which received a new bust, this colonial issue kept the King's old portrait, engraved by Auguste-François Michaut. It was struck at the Utrecht Mint under the mintmaster Paulus Charles Gerard Poelman. The 1840 date, the year of the abdication, was struck in 1,981,267 pieces.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.6 mm.
