First gulden of Wilhelmina, with long hair (1892-1897)
This silver guilder (1 gulden) in 945 thousandths silver is the first struck in the name of Queen Wilhelmina, from 1892 to 1897. Wilhelmina became Queen of the Netherlands in November 1890, on the death of her father, her mother Emma acted as regent until she came of age, and she was inaugurated on 6 September 1898. She reigned until 1948. The youthful long-haired portrait was engraved by Willem Jacobus Schammer, who signs W.S. This type was later replaced by the portrait by Pier Pander, created for her inauguration. The reverse bears the crowned arms and the legend MUNT VAN HET KONINGRYK DER NEDERLANDEN (Coin of the Kingdom of the Netherlands), with the old spelling Y. The 1892 date was struck in 3,500,000 pieces at the Utrecht Mint, under the mintmaster Hugo Laurens Adriaan van den Wall Bake.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.15 mm.
