Series of gold 10 gulden of Wilhelmina with long hair (1892-1897)

The coin's story

This 10 guilder coin in 900 thousandths gold, the “tientje”, belongs to the first series in the name of Queen Wilhelmina, struck from 1892 to 1897. The gold 10 guilder coin became the reference coin of the Netherlands after the law of 6 June 1875, which moved the country from the silver standard to the gold standard. Wilhelmina became queen in November 1890, on the death of her father William III, her mother Emma acted as regent until she came of age, and she was inaugurated on 6 September 1898. She reigned until 1948. The youthful portrait, with long loose hair and a pearl necklace, was engraved by Willem Jacobus Schammer. The 1897 date was struck in 453,696 pieces at the Utrecht Mint, it exists with the beads of the border detached or attached, as well as overdates.
