Series of 10 cents of William III (1849-1890)

The coin's story

This 10 cents coin in 640 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck throughout the reign of William III, from 1849 to 1890. William III, King of the Netherlands and Grand Duke of Luxembourg, reigned from 1849 until his death on 23 November 1890, his daughter Wilhelmina succeeded him in the Netherlands, while Luxembourg, reserved for male heirs, passed to Adolphe of Nassau. The portrait is the work of Johannes Petrus Schouberg, engraver at the Utrecht Mint, who signs I.P.S. The reverse shows the value and the date within an oak wreath. The 1881 date was struck in 2,000,000 pieces at the Utrecht Mint, under the mintmaster Philip Hendrik Taddel, a rare variety has no dot after the date.
