This 10 cents coin in 640 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1892 to 1897 in the name of Queen Wilhelmina. Wilhelmina became queen in November 1890, on the death of her father William III, her mother Emma acted as regent until she came of age, and she was inaugurated on 6 September 1898. She reigned until 1948. The youthful portrait, designed by Ludwig Jünger and engraved by Willem Jacobus Schammer, still shows her as a girl. The reverse shows the value and the date within a wreath of oak leaves. The 1897 date was struck in 7,850,000 pieces at the Utrecht Mint, under the mintmaster Hugo Laurens Adriaan van den Wall Bake.
