From 1991 to 1997, Jersey devoted its 1 pound coins to seven ships built on the island in the 19th century, when shipbuilding was one of its great industries, before steam replaced sail and iron replaced wooden hulls. The 1992 coin, engraved by Robert Evans, shows the brig Hebe, launched in Jersey in 1861. The obverse bears Arnold Machin's portrait of Elizabeth II, with the date below. The edge carries INSULA CAESAREA, the old Latin name of the island. In 1992, the Royal Mint struck only 20,000 pieces in nickel-brass for circulation, alongside 3,000 in silver proof. Like the British round pound, it was demonetised on 15 October 2017.
