10 pence coin of Jersey with the Faldouet Dolmen, large module (1983-1990)
In 1983, Jersey renewed its coins with a series whose reverses show monuments of the island. On the 10 pence coin, Robert Lowe engraved the Faldouet dolmen, also called La Pouquelaye de Faldouet, in St Martin on the east coast. This passage grave, built in the Neolithic more than 5,000 years ago, is one of the finest on the island: a passage of standing stones leads to a chamber covered by an enormous slab. The obverse bears Arnold Machin's portrait of Elizabeth II, with the date below. In 1987, the Royal Mint struck 800,000 pieces. This large 28.5 mm module was demonetised on 1 July 1993, after the introduction of a smaller 10 pence coin.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.23 mm.
