The commemorated date, 1875, marks Norway's accession to the Scandinavian Monetary Union (with Sweden and Denmark). This union replaced the old monetary units (such as the Speciedaler) and introduced the Krone (Crown) as the new common unit. Although the Union was de facto dissolved after World War I, Norway, Sweden and Denmark retained the unit name of Krone (or Krona). The minting of this coin in 1975 celebrates the longevity of this system. The 1975 5 Kroner coin is therefore a tribute to Norway's monetary heritage while being minted at the dawn of its oil era that was to redefine its economic future.
