Jersey 5 new pence, issued before decimalisation (1968)
Like the United Kingdom, Jersey put its 5 and 10 new pence coins into circulation as early as 1968, three years before the official change to the decimal system in 1971. The 5 new pence coin had the same value as the old shilling and could therefore circulate alongside it during the transition. The reverse shows George Kruger Gray's shield of Jersey with three leopards, and the obverse Arnold Machin's portrait of Elizabeth II. In 1968, the Royal Mint struck 3,600,000 pieces. The type was struck again in 1980, then the word NEW disappeared from Jersey's coins in 1981. This 23.6 mm module was demonetised on 31 December 1990, after the introduction of a smaller 5 pence coin.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.75 mm.
