1/12 shilling coin (one penny) of Jersey under George V (1911-1923)

The coin's story

Jersey strikes its own bronze coins in fractions of the shilling. Until 1871, the largest was worth 1/13 of a shilling, then from 1877 the island aligned its currency with the British system: the 1/12 shilling coin is henceforth worth one penny. Under George V, this type was struck in 1911, 1913 and 1923 by the Royal Mint in London, in 204,000 pieces each year. The obverse shows the crowned bust of the King in robes of state, the work of Bertram Mackennal, whose initials B.M. appear on the shoulder. The reverse takes up the shield of Jersey with three leopards designed by Leonard Charles Wyon for the coins of the Victorian era. These pennies circulated until the change to the decimal system and were demonetised on 27 December 1971.
