¼ shilling coin of Jersey, twelve-sided (1964)
Jersey, a British Crown Dependency in the Channel, strikes its own coinage in fractions of the shilling. The ¼ shilling is worth three pence, like the British threepence. The first type of Elizabeth II, struck from 1957 to 1960, was round. In 1964, the coin took a twelve-sided shape, like the British nickel-brass threepence. Its reverse shows the arms of Jersey, three gold leopards on a shield, designed by George Kruger Gray, and its obverse the crowned portrait of the Queen by Cecil Thomas. The Royal Mint at Tower Hill, in London, struck 1,200,000 pieces for circulation and 20,000 in proof. After the change to the decimal system in 1971, the coin was demonetised on 27 December 1971.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2.49 mm.
