900th anniversary of the Norman Conquest of England (1066-1966)
In 1966, Jersey celebrated the 900th anniversary of the Norman Conquest of England. In 1066, William, Duke of Normandy, whose duchy included the Channel Islands, won the Battle of Hastings and became King of England. The dates 1066 and 1966 frame George Kruger Gray's shield with three leopards, inherited from the arms of the Anglo-Norman kings. The obverse shows Cecil Thomas's crowned bust of Elizabeth II. The 1⁄12 shilling was worth one penny, hence its name, as Jersey divided the shilling into twelve like the United Kingdom. The Royal Mint struck 1,200,000 pieces, plus 30,000 in proof. It is Jersey's last 1⁄12 shilling before the change to the decimal system in 1971.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 1.75 mm.
