2 pence coin of Jersey with the Hermitage of Saint Helier (1983-1992)
In 1983, Jersey renewed its coins with a series whose reverses show monuments of the island. On the 2 pence coin, Robert Lowe engraved the Hermitage of Saint Helier, a small vaulted oratory perched on a rock in St Aubin's Bay, near Elizabeth Castle. According to tradition, Helier, who came from Tongeren in present-day Belgium, lived there as a hermit in the 6th century before being killed by raiders from the sea around 555. Having become the island's patron saint, he gave his name to the capital, St Helier. The obverse bears Arnold Machin's portrait of Elizabeth II, with the date below. In 1984, the Royal Mint struck 750,000 pieces.
