The coin's story

This bronze 5 øre coin belongs to the new series of Olav V, smaller than the previous one: 19 mm and 3 g instead of 27 mm and 8 g. Olav V, son of Haakon VII, reigned from 1957 to 1991. The obverse bears the arms of Norway without any inscription. The letters AB are the initials of Arne Jon Bakken, mintmaster from 1961 to 1980, and ØH those of the engraver Øivind Hansen. The type was struck from 1973 to 1982, the 1973 date, the first year, has 52,866,175 pieces. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 1 January 1984.
