The coin's story
This cupronickel 5 kroner coin commemorates the centenary of the Norwegian krone. The krone, divided into 100 øre, replaced the speciedaler in 1875, when Norway joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union founded by Sweden and Denmark in 1873. The reverse, engraved by Øivind Hansen, shows a coiner striking coins with a hammer, a pair of scales in the background, with the legend KRONEMYNT I 100 ÅR (A hundred years of the krone). The obverse bears the crowned shield with the Norwegian lion between the two parts of the value. The letters AB are the initials of Arne Jon Bakken, mintmaster from 1961 to 1980. This commemorative coin is legal tender, this example comes from a set. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 9 July 2000.
