Series of 2 øre of Oscar II (1876-1902)

The coin's story

This 2 øre coin in bronze, 95% copper, 4% tin and 1% zinc, was struck under Oscar II, King of Sweden and Norway from 1872 until the separation of the two countries in 1905. The krone, divided into 100 øre, replaced the speciedaler in 1875, when Norway joined the Scandinavian Monetary Union founded by Sweden and Denmark in 1873. The obverse bears the crowned shield with the Norwegian lion holding an axe, between the letters of the royal monogram. The reverse shows the value within an oak wreath. The type was struck from 1876 to 1902. The 1899 date has 1,000,000 pieces.
