This cupronickel 5 kroner coin commemorates 350 years of the Norwegian Army. The year 1628 is regarded as the birth of the modern Norwegian army: an ordinance of King Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway, then created a national army based on the conscription of young farmers. One side shows a sword between the crowned monogram of Christian IV, dated 1628, and that of Olav V, dated 1978, below the word HÆREN (the Army). The other bears the crowned Norwegian lion holding an axe. Both sides were engraved by Øivind Hansen. The date has 2,989,768 pieces, and the coin ceased to be legal tender on 9 July 2000.
