150th anniversary of emigration to America (from Norway)

The coin's story

This cupronickel 5 kroner coin commemorates 150 years of Norwegian emigration to America. On 5 July 1825, the sloop Restaurasjonen left Stavanger with 52 passengers and arrived in New York on 9 October: this voyage is regarded as the first organised emigration from Norway. The reverse, engraved by Øivind Hansen, shows the ship under full sail, above the legend VEIEN MOT VEST (The way west). The obverse bears the crowned Norwegian lion holding an axe. The letters AB are the initials of Arne Jon Bakken, mintmaster from 1961 to 1980. This example comes from a set. The coin ceased to be legal tender on 9 July 2000.
