Series of 50 cents of Newfoundland under George V (1911-1919)
This 50 cents coin in 925 thousandths silver belongs to the series struck from 1911 to 1919 for Newfoundland, in the name of King George V. A British colony and then a dominion, Newfoundland had its own decimal currency from 1865 to 1947, it joined Canadian Confederation only in 1949, as the tenth province, and its dollar was then replaced at par by the Canadian dollar. The King's crowned portrait was engraved by Edgar Bertram MacKennal and the reverse by William Henry James Blakemore. This example bears the letter C of the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa, which struck 306,267 pieces in 1919. The other dates of the series were struck at the Royal Mint in London.
Actual size compared with the 2 € and 1 € coins. Thickness: 2 mm.
