HAAKON DEN SJUENDE NORGES KONGE H7
The crowned monogram of King Haakon VII (H7 intertwined). The mint mark of Kongsberg (crossed hammers X) is visible under the monogram.
Norway · 1956 · 1 kroneThis coin represents one of the last numismatic testimonies of the reign of Haakon VII. He was the first king of independent Norway since 1905 and was venerated as a national symbol of resistance and determination for having refused to capitulate to Nazi Germany in 1940, forcing the government into exile and becoming the spiritual leader of the Norwegian Resistance. The monogram H7 on the coin is a direct reminder of this historical role, as it was a clandestine symbol of loyalty and popular defiance in occupied Norway. The year 1956 is the penultimate full year of the reign of Haakon VII. He died in September 1957, and his son, Olav V, succeeded him. Therefore, the coins dated 1956 are among the last issues before Norwegian coins bore the portrait or monogram of the new king.
